I live in the state of California that once again has been devastated by fire and now possibly flash floods. Many dear people have lost their life long treasures and much more. They are looking forward to a Thanksgiving that may be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
I, as many, pray for those who’s lives have forever been changed by the fires. I am thankful there were shelters for these dear people to go to. I am thankful for all who stepped up to help. I am thankful for the first responders who lay their lives down to protect these people. Yet, am I thankful for ALL that I should be thankful for?
Let me digress a bit. Last week I also was displaced due to the fumigation of my home. I moved many of my belongings into boxes to take out of my home for 3 days. I moved to a hotel that did not have a working TV. I spent 3 days unpacking boxes and cleaning my home. I found out a need a new roof due to termite damage. You’re thinking; “ In comparison to those who lost everything you should be thankful that you have a home to go back to”. I am. I am thankful that I have my home to return to. I am thankful that I have my family to celebrate Thanksgiving with. I am thankful that I have the finances to pay for the repairs to my home. BUT am I thankful for EVERYTHING.
God reminds us to be thankful in all circumstances.
“Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Message Ver.
Why are we to be thankful in all circumstances? To be made whole and holy, to be made into the person the God wants us to be, be sanctified.
… the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it! 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 Message Ver.
The song, Something Better, points out; only God can give us what we truly need. That may be a loss, a challenge or a dream that drifts off to sea…
So many dreams sent out to sea, All that my heart was longing for. I felt it steal the breath from me, to see them washed upon the shore. You didn’t give me everything I wanted ‘cuz you knew what I needed more. This is my something better. You brought it all together. Like finding buried treasure through closing doors and countless tears. You saw me standing here. This is my new horizon, the song after the silence. thank God for stormy weather…
This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for:
- Termites that allow me to spend 3 days away with my husband.
- TV’s that don’t work so I can snuggle in bed with my husband.
- Challenges in life that show me that when life changes, God never does.
- Apprehension over the future so I can know that God is my Provider
- A God who is: All Powerful, An Over-Comer, Compassionate, Wise and Faithful.
What are ALL the things you are thankful for this Thanksgiving?
